![]() This is a great device, but I didn't like it due to the AMOLED screen (I prefer the long life reflective) and also the 20mm watch strap - I prefer the larger 22mm size on their other watches. ![]() The new Garmin Venu 2 Plus will give you those features as well, in a slightly different format, but it does tie into any smart feature that your phone may have but probably still works best in most cases with an Android versus an iPhone. If you NEED to be able to answer phone calls on your wrist and respond to messages with your voice or use the worlds tiniest on screen keyboard to type messages, then the Galaxy Watch 4 will of course give you those features - as long as you make sure to constantly keep it charged. There are lots of good comments and comparisons in this thread. My Garmin lasts me a week, does a fantastic job tracking my walks, jogs, bike rides, indoor cardio/exercise, sleep times, and gives me a week of battery consistently. But if you put a nice watch face on their and a strap that fits your needs and style, you might find that you love it. Hell yeah.ĭoes the reflective screen look less "cool" than the AMOLED - of course. I can look at my watch like a watch and see the time. I have one of the models (Vivoactive 4) with the reflective screen and honestly, I freaking love it. My Garmin doesn't offer all the features of the GW4 or say even a Fitbit Sense, but I prefer the ability to read my screen at all times whenever *I can also see and without having to turn my wrist in some odd way to invoke the screen turning on. The battery life on that watch is atrocious, and with an insane "slow charging" feature it will take you almost two hours to hit a full charge. Wear OS is inferior to what Samsung had going on with Tizen. It's extremely lightweight.īut the weight thing plays a part into why I ultimately returned the GW4 within my return window. I didn't find the Venu 2 to be "built like a 1980s Casio" - it's build quality is honestly not that much different from the GW4 although sure I will agree that the Venu 2 needs more weight to feel a bit more premium. For the use case the OP described, I would personally recommend a Garmin watch, and that's what is on my wrist right now. I've owned Fitbit, Garmin, and Galaxy watches. ![]() It's not perfect but it sucks the least out of all of them (including Apple Watch - don't get me started).īeauty truly is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder. It's just a theory, but I get very predictable results from it, from sleep patterns to HR monitoring. I think that's why some people have problems with it - they haven't given it enough time to learn. As far as I can tell, it learns about your norms and throws away measurements that are outside of it. The only problem I have with it is it sometimes doesn't catch high heart rate events that are out of the ordinary. It just loses the tracking and when you get home to review it, you've got maybe two data points at best. Unless you carry your phone and use its GPS, you'll get no useful data from it at all. GPS on the Charge 5 is also terrible, full stop. Maybe it's fine if you sleep a straight 6-8 hours (which I don't), but if you sleep in chunks of 3-4 hours at a time, then get up, go back to bed, etc., forget about sleep tracking. The Charge 5 sleep tracking is similarly awful, if you have irregular sleep patterns. The only good thing about it is the battery life, which makes sense because it's mostly just sitting there drooling on itself all day. The GPS tracking (for cycling at least) is also terrible, all over the place. It doesn't accurately record time to sleep/time to wake and also doesn't track, say, afternoon naps at all. Sleep tracking on the Garmin is terrible. The Garmin and Fitbit are sitting in the drawer. I have the GW4, Garmin Venu 2, and a Fitbit Charge 5. No selling/trading posts or links to online listings. ![]() With this in mind, the first thing you should do before purchasing a package is determine what your exact design intentions are, as well as what you will expect the software to do. That said, no program, even the do-it-yourself variety, is going to be a complete no-brainer. For most amateur designers, simplicity and ease of use are key. But in terms of both capability and complexity, it’s probably a bit more program than the average consumer needs or is willing to learn. To the professional, it is the perfect design tool. Would it take an architect to run them or could anybody use these programs? I work daily with a computer-aided design package known as AutoCAD, a high-end, accurate drafting and design tool that requires months to learn and years to master. I started by gathering several of what seemed to be the most popular homedesign titles. Could these home-design packages stand up to the test? I decided to find out. It requires thorough planning and meticulous attention to detail. As an architect, I know how difficult and time-consuming it can be to design anything, even someone’s residence. Imagine my surprise as I perused one of the box covers and noticed drawings of detailed floor plans and interior room furniture layouts and 3-D renderings and backyard decks and landscaped yards and …wow, what an amazing package! I must admit, however, that my initial reaction was one of skepticism. Why these products, you ask? Well, you should know that I am, by trade, an architect. In Kenya, the Sera Conservancy partnered with local community members and government representatives to successfully reintroduce the Black rhino after a 20-year absence. “What’s exciting about this study is that it resoundingly validates their efforts through the first global, quantitative review. “A lot of people in conservation organizations have gone the extra mile to engage communities in local wildlife restoration efforts for a long time,” said ESPM professor Arthur Middleton, the study’s senior author. To do so, the authors analyzed over 300 wildlife restoration attempts conducted in 80 countries from the 1960s to the present day. They found that proactively engaging local partners and including economic, educational, cultural, and other objectives during the planning process made positive outcomes 10 percent more likely. “Our work shows that the long-term success of restoration attempts relies on public support and local buy-in.”Įxamining successful and unsuccessful wildlife restoration projects can give us a better understanding of what factors contribute to success, Serota said, which is paramount to preventing future loss of biodiversity. “Efforts to restore wild populations and ‘rewild’ ecosystems increasingly capture public attention but can be socially and politically divisive,” said lead author Mitchell Serota, a PhD candidate in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM). The first-of-its-kind analysis, published today in Nature Communications, found that partnering with local communities and setting goals relating to the social, cultural, political, or economic aspects of wildlife restoration efforts made each attempt significantly more successful. But for every successful attempt, many restoration efforts fail to overcome the very same human conflicts that led to their population decline.Ī new study from a team of UC Berkeley researchers may offer conservationists clues on how to improve the outcomes of future wildlife restorations. Wildlife restoration efforts, which include the reintroduction of individual animals and the recovery of key habitats, have supported the return of wolves to the American West, Andean condors to Patagonia, and Chinese alligators to the Yangtze River. Keep in mind that up to 31 LEDs will be lit at once ("IT IS TWENTY FIVE MINUTES PAST ELEVEN"), so if you drive each LED at 20mA you will need a 620mA power supply - this is part of the reason why I planned for 10mA a piece.įirst, trim one lead of each resistor leaving about 3-5mm (see photo 1). I chose to use 1Kohm resistors and drive the LEDs at 10mA (half their rated current), but you might want to use 470ohm or smaller depending on your power supply and LEDs. We need to attach a resistor to each LED to limit the current that flows through it. Now comes the repetitive task of soldering all 98 LEDs and resistors. (Edit 8/1/10: Added a better description of the construction paper border and more pictures) Also, put a piece of black electrical tape behind each of the non-used spacer letters to make sure no stray light gets through. Tape this on the inside (back) of the letter mask to help diffuse the LED light and make the letters a dim gray when not illuminated. Now, cut out a square piece of the black garbage bag big enough to cover all of the letters. Tape the transparencies to the back of the border (photo 6). Use a utility knife to cut out the inner square leaving a 0.5" paper border (photo 5). Mark lines 0.5" in from each side forming an 8"x8" square (photo 4). Cut a piece of construction paper to be 9"x9". Therefore you need to cut a piece of construction paper to form a border and fill the gap - it also adds a nice touch of color. Note: the viewable area of the Ikea frame is 8.5" square, but unfortunately you can't print all the way to the edge of the transparency. Align the letters of the two layers and tape the layers together with double-sided tape on the top and bottom black regions - see photos 2 and 3. Depending on how dark your ink is you may need more or fewer layers to get an opaque black.Ĭut off the clear parts of the transparency so only the black square is left. The ink wasn't quite black enough to completely block out light, so I printed 2 of them and stacked them. Since there's a lot of black ink, I had my transparencies printed at Staples for something like 50 cents a piece. I thought of several different ways to make the letters, such as silk-screening on the back of the glass, or having a custom black sticker made, but eventually I settled on printing black onto transparencies - see the attached PDF file. This results in a much stronger measurement signal and allows the use of laser diodes as light source and silicon photodiodes as detector. In contrast, the signal intensity in the heterodyne measurement is proportional to i s x i 0, the product of the scattered intensity and intensity of the reference. This is proportional to i s 2, the mean scattered light intensity squared, in the homodyne measurement. The most important of these is signal intensity. Of the two approaches, the heterodyne mode with "controlled reference" offers many advantages over the homodyne setup in a dynamic light scattering analyzer. The resulting detector signal in both methods contains a distribution of frequencies that is representative of the size of the particles in suspension. In contrast to this, controlled reference, or heterodyne detection, superimposes the scattered light on a portion of the incident light, which provides the reference for determining the frequency shifts. In the homodyne approach, the scattered light itself provides the reference for determining the frequency shift. Two approaches exist for optical reference: homodyne detection (also called "self-beating" or "self-reference") and heterodyne detection ("reference beating" or "controlled reference"). In Dynamic Light Scattering, the shift frequencies are on the scale of 1 Hz to 100KHz, which can be easily measured. ![]() These shift frequencies can be determined by comparison with a coherent optical reference. Measured over time, motion causes a distribution of frequency shifts. The light scattered by the particles thus contains slight frequency shifts caused by the time-dependent position or velocity of the particles. The fluctuations are caused by the fact that the particles scattering the light move relative to each other, resulting in constantly changing interferences within the total scattered light. The temporal fluctuation of the scattered light signal is important here, because it contains information about the movement of the particles. The particles are illuminated with a monochromatic, coherent light source (laser) and the light scattered by the particles is recorded. The Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technique measures motion optically by recording the scattered light signal at a fixed angle. Other advantages include measurements of both highly concentrated and highly dilute samples, and the ability to determine Zeta Potential, molecular weight and concentration, which is built into many analyzers. It is a technique suited to the analysis and characterization of nanoparticles. While Laser Diffraction (LD) often reaches its limits for particles smaller than 100 nm due to the weak signal and the low angular variance in scattering signal, this is where the strength of dynamic light scattering lies. The light scattered by particles contains information on the diffusion speed and thus on the size distribution.ĭynamic light scattering enables the analysis of particles in a size range from 0.3 nm to 10000 nm. It is based on the Brownian motion of particles - this states that smaller particles move faster, while larger ones move slower in a liquid. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) is an established and precise measurement technique for characterizing particle sizes in suspensions and emulsions.
